Smart Eartag: continuous temperature and activity from the ear

A lightweight electronic ear tag that measures body temperature and counts steps around the clock, so fever, heat and illness show up as data before they show up in the animal. Two form factors, both IP67, with batteries rated for 2–4 years.

Key features

Precise body temperature

Measures 32–44 °C with ±0.1 °C accuracy across the 36–38 °C band where fever and heat-related rises begin, and ±0.2 °C across the rest of the range.

Built-in pedometer

Step counts capture the activity changes that come with heat, lameness and illness, and feed each animal's behavioral baseline.

Automatic headcount

Every tag reports on its own, so inventory by pen or paddock comes from the data instead of a manual tally.

No battery replacement

A sealed button cell (240 mAh single-point, 130 mAh dual-point) and a typical draw under 10 µA give 2–4 years of operation, sized so the battery never needs replacing while the tag is on the animal.

Light on the ear

At 12.5 g (single-point) or 9 g (dual-point), the tag is light enough for cattle, sheep, goats and pigs.

IP67 sealed

A composite housing rated IP67 against dust and immersion stands up to mud, washdowns and weather.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the ear tag temperature reading?
±0.1 °C between 36 °C and 38 °C, the band where fever and heat-related rises begin, and ±0.2 °C across the rest of its 32–44 °C range. Because ear temperature behaves differently from rectal temperature, Herdwize compares each reading with the animal's own baseline rather than a fixed threshold.
How long does the battery last?
2–4 years. The battery is sized so it never needs replacing while the tag is on the animal, whether that is a six-month feedlot stay or several years in a breeding herd. The tag draws under 10 µA in typical operation from a sealed 240 mAh (single-point) or 130 mAh (dual-point) button cell.
Which tag should I choose?
The single-point tag carries the larger battery. The dual-point tag is the lighter, more compact option at 9 g and measures temperature at two points. Both share the same temperature range, accuracy, pedometer and IP67 rating. We recommend a model for your species and handling system during a briefing.
Which animals can wear the Smart Eartag?
The tag is in use on cattle, sheep, goats and pigs. It is attached through the ear like a conventional ear tag during routine handling.
Does the ear tag track location?
No. The ear tag focuses on temperature, activity and headcount. For GPS position, geofencing and anti-theft protection, pair it with a Herdwize GPS collar.
Does the Smart Eartag monitor rumination?
Not yet. Today the tag measures body temperature and activity (step counts). Rumination monitoring is on the Herdwize roadmap.
