LoRa Gateway: a private farm network for collars and sensors

One weatherproof gateway covers a 5 km radius in open terrain, collects data from LoRa collars and water and soil sensors, and forwards it to the Herdwize platform over Ethernet, all on less than 4 W.

Key features

Private LoRa network

A private LoRa protocol links the gateway with Herdwize collars and sensors, so field data never depends on cellular coverage or per-device data plans.

5 km coverage

Each gateway covers a radius of about 5 km in open areas. Larger or hilly properties add gateways on high ground.

Bluetooth 5.1 built in

A BLE 5.1 radio with two external Bluetooth antennas sits alongside the LoRa radio for short-range device communication.

Flexible reporting, no per-message fees

The gateway manages the collars in its range. Because Herdwize runs the whole network, reporting intervals can be set for each herd, as often as every minute on GC010 collars, with no per-message data charges.

Low power, simple install

Draws less than 4 W from a 12 V DC adapter and connects to your network through a single RJ45 Ethernet port.

Built for outdoors

An IP66 ABS enclosure operates from −20 °C to 70 °C and at 0–95% humidity, whether it is mounted on a pole, a wall or under the eaves.

Frequently asked questions

How many gateways do I need?
Plan on one gateway for every 5 km radius of open terrain. Hills, tree lines and buildings shorten the range, so larger properties are planned around high mounting points. A single gateway usually covers housed herds and compact properties.
Does the gateway need an internet connection?
Yes. The gateway forwards data to the Herdwize platform through its 10 Mbps Ethernet port, so it needs a wired network connection where it is installed. Collars and sensors in the field need no internet or cellular coverage of their own.
Can the gateway handle a Canadian winter?
The gateway is rated to operate from −20 °C to 70 °C. Where winter temperatures fall below −20 °C, we plan a sheltered mounting location, such as inside a barn gable, as part of your deployment.
Which devices connect to the gateway?
LoRa collars (GC05, GC07, GC010) and the water-level and soil sensors. 4G collars (GC08, GC09) report over the cellular network and do not need a gateway.
